Manhattan

A shoplifter got more than he bargained for when he was arrested for trying to swipe cigarettes with a razor in an Alphabet City bodega, cops said yesterday.

Albert Felicia, 41, of Brooklyn, asked a 48-year-old clerk for "loose cigarettes" in the deli on Avenue D and East Seventh Street at 8:50 p.m. on Christmas Day, cops said.

When the worker said he had none, Felicia jumped over the counter and took a razor out of his mouth, but pummeled the clerk instead of slashing him, cops said.

The clerk allegedly fought back, pushing Felicia out of the store and calling 911.

Police quickly arrived and arrested Felicia, who was charged with menacing, weapon possession and attempted robbery.

Anderson! You were reporting the news on FRIDAY NIGHT. I was at home, slender, relaxed, and confident. I was looking at you through the television scream(screen) and I thought you were checking me out on your end too! I know your broadcast goes into millions of homes but I know that Friday night you were broadcasting directly to me. And hey, I'm picking up what you're putting down stud. Anyways, I was not sure until right before the commercial break that you were definitely cruising me. And then, it happened! You said; "we'll be right back" and you looked down at your desk, and I thought, if he's interested, he'll look up at me one more time before they cut to commercial. And that's when it happened!! They cut to commercial without you looking up. But I told myself, if he is looking directly at the camera with a certain intensity (almost a squint) when they come back from commercials, he'll definitely be checking me out! And you were!! Aaaaagghh!! Like freaking magic man!! I adore flattery and you are sooooo handsome. But more than coy glances I appreciate directness. And if you read this. No, when you read this, yes, I'll have ONE drink with you. And no, you're not gonna get me all liquored up and have your way with me on the first date sneaky anchor man! And when I move in I hold the remote control!! And NO CNN!! That's for work! When you come home I need your attention to be on us! And no constant work chatter either, PLEASE!! I will already know everything you're gonna say from watching you on the news. So our dinner discussions will have to be limited to what I did that day at the petstore I work at. Or we can talk about the gym because that is neutral grounds. Or we can talk about night clubs and/or saunas. Or Beyonce. Because she is fierce! Or Tyra because she is fierce! Or Heidi because she is fierce!

Voting Day ADD and other stuff you want to know about

This here is what we call buckshot blogging, so here goes:

1-

DJ Falcon and the Roule crew were fucking AMAZING at Le Poisson Rouge on Saturday night. Some of the DFA records crew was there too, but we walked in around 12 and Falcon had just started his set. This seriously, no joke, was one of the best sets of music I've heard in a long time. Writing this I just got chills. Those Frenchies sure know how to ROCK that SHIT OUT! It had tinges of Daft Punk, but it was totally DJ Falcon putting his own spin on anything from rock to booty bass.

The old school heads like me and my friends scattered across the globe appreciated the beautiful artistry and rawness of Falcon mixing and mashing classics like DJ Funk's old chicago booty house ("shake whatchya Mama gave ya!") with MIA or JT. Or the sheer genius in dusting off Roule's gems from the 90s like Bangalter's Tracks on the Rocks v.1 or Daft Punk's Around the World and putting it with new shit like Diplo or MIA. In one night, my faith in house music and the dance music 'scene' was restored. But man oh man, I feel like a grandpa on the dancefloor sometimes lately!

Here's a vid of that bastard playing "Bucky Done Gun" with "Stardust" AND Hall and motherfucking Oates' "I can't go for that".

Here is "Together" mixing with "So Much Love to Give". And yeah, this is where I cried. I seriously CRIED. I know, I know. I'm a big fag. Sorry it cuts right in the middle of the breakdown/buildup...

OK item 2-

Solex (AKA Elisabeth Esselink) is just wrapping this new whack-a-doodle project of hers that sounds like a quasi Jules Verne cum Pirates of the Caribbean quest, but instead of the high seas, she and her raggamuffin 'crew' will only be sailing around the Netherlands picking up weird musical 'hitchhikers'?!? I love her.

From her website www.solex.net :

An audio-map of the Netherlands
This summer I am going to start a new project called Solex Ahoy. With an old motor boat I’ll sail through all twelve Dutch provinces accompanied by musician / captain Bart van Poppel. In every province we’ll pick up a few musicians (one by one) for an improvisation session that will be recorded aboard. Every musician is asked to improvise to a loop which will be heard on his/her headset. At the end of this trip I’ll be able to cut ‘n paste 12 songs out of these jams that will reflect the sound of every one of the 12 Dutch provinces. In that way you can look at it as an audio-map of The Netherlands. I’ve invited a wide range of musicians. A bunch of young but talented girls & boys and a few musicians who’s fame has already stretched to quite a few years.

Kick off is Monday August 18th and we expect to be back in Amsterdam October 1st.

Solex "Honkey Donkey"-

Andy Riley from one of my favorite house music teams Inland Knights (and Toka Project) just posted this on Facebook:

After the huge success of Borrowed Volumes 1 & 2, its time for the next installment of cheekiness. You guessed it....
BORROWED Vol 3!
TRACK A is already causing a stir, featuring lead vocals by a prominent female artist who shall remain nameless! With an irresistable backing track that simply has to be played out loud. Feedback from DJ’s lucky enough to get a promo of this has been crazy!...a must have for DJ’s who like their soulful vocals and deep grooves.
TRACK B takes things a little easier with a wicked laid back house groove and some (well known?) female vocal snips that bring this track together. A great early/late set track for DJ’s who like the more chilled vibes.
BORROWED is fast becoming a label to watch. Pressed up on limited runs of 10” vinyl and rumoured to be the brainchild of house veterans Simon Newby (Da Sunlounge) and Andy Riley (Inland knights/Toka project). The Borrowed series has gone from strength to strength, and with this third volume, it shows no signs of letting up!

New and Old Music I'm Excited to Share with YOU!

Haven't made a music post in a while... never even got around to my 2007 Best Album Reco... which, for the record is an extremely tough call between Animal Collective's Strawberry Jam, Radiohead's In Rainbows, Of Montreal's Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?, M.I.A.'s Kala, Klaxons' Myths of the Near Future, Interpol's Our Love to Admire, Datarock's self-titled first album, !!!'s Myth Take, the Shins' Wincing the Night Away, Arcade Fire's Neon Bible, LCD Soundsystem's Sound of Silver, and finally Panda Bear's Person Pitch. I must also give hearty nods to Tracey Thorn's tender coming-out-of-her-shell album Out of the Woods, Bjork's Volta, Patrick Wolf's The Magic Position, as well as Moving Units' sophomore effort I instantly fell in love with upon hearing the title - Hexes for Exes - and finally the blaringly obvious and loudly critically acclaimed releases from Amy Winehouse (Back to Black) and Mark Ronson (Version).

2008 is already proving to be quite a powerhouse year for solid releases.

Here's what I've recently snagged - some new, some old - this stuff comes HIGHLY recommended, but of course you should always hear for yourselves:

Boys Noize - Oi Oi Oi
Bang Gang - Something Wrong
Kylie Minogue - X
Celebration - Modern Tribe
Cut Copy - In Ghost Colours
Daft Punk - Alive
Erlend Oye - Unrest
Final Fantasy - Has a Good Home
Funk D'Void - Dos
Soulwax - Nite Versions
The Glass (various remixes)
GusGus - Attention
Matthew Dear - Asa Breed (get the black bonus track edition if you can...)
Hot Chip - Made in the Dark
Hercules & Love Affar (Self-titled debut album)
In Flagranti - Wronger Than Anyone Else
Inland Knights - various (it's all good), but Best of Drop Music is a great foray
Jarvis Cocker (of Pulp fame) - Jarvis
John Tejada - various (again - all good)
MGMT - Oracular Spectacular
Miss Kittin - Batbox
Mr. Oizo - Moustache (Half a Scissor)
Mu Fish Fu - Out of Breach
New Young Pony Club - Fantastic Playroom
Professor Murder - Professor Murder Rides the Subway
Shitake Monkey - Street Beef
Purple Crush - Welcome 2 Emo Club
Riton - Djalma
Robyn - Robyn
Simian Mobile Disco - Attack Decay Sustain Release
The Teenagers - reality check
White Girl Lust - Solid Bump Records (you can find this mix on GBH.de - the best funk/disco/tech-house mix I've heard in years!)
Yello - You Gotta Say Yes to Another Excess / Stella
Yelle - Pop-up
OM Records' - 300th Release! Sounds of Om Vol. 6
Theatre of Disco - Theatre of Disco
White Williams - Smoke (with the lovely, the talented Sofia Lamar featured in the album art)
M83 - Saturdays=Youth
Does It Offend You, Yeah? - You Have No Idea What You're Getting Yourself Into

Also there's this new site where you can upload your own, and stream other peoples' mixes from all over the place. For anybody who was of the mixtape generation, this will definitely pull your sentimental heartstrings and it's just cool to see what kind of playlists other people are making. The site is growing exponentially. Totally check it out for yourself!

you never know...

Goldfrapp - A & E (first single from Seventh Tree)

Goldfrapp's back. Their new single A & E was released last week by itself and this week with remixes. The single was taken from the band's soon-to-be-released album called Seventh Tree - hitting the streets and stores on 25 February - and if you're a true 'Frapp fan, you'll enjoy the change from the disco-dipped glam sleaze we've come to expect from the group.

Seventh Tree touches back to the sweeping soundscapes of their first album Felt Mountain, and adds depth to the band's repertoire. Keep in mind Alison Goldfrapp began her career as a performance artist fresh out of art school. Her first performance pieces combined her classically-trained soprano opera voice with the act of milking a cow.

This effort has lifted the curtain back on Alison's feminine vulnerability, and more importantly exposes the folly that is being human. This is the kind of album you can put on and listen to all the way through and appreciate every song. At first listen I wasn't a fan, but after a few listens I felt myself softening to the pared-down structure of the folky-sounding songs and began to really enjoy them. The drowsy melodies and ghostly guitars beg to be played on lazy Sundays or at twilight dinner parties.

Here's the provacative video for "A & E". If you were lucky enough to see Goldfrapp's last tour, you have to wonder if the leaf-people featured in this video are any of the same horse's head dancers that flanked Alison on stage.

Enjoy!
