Concert: Fever Ray at Webster Hall on Monday 9/28
Up above our heads smoke and lasers moved with each other to create the appearance of clouds. The audience was left dumbfounded feeling like we were floating in the sky with a badass soundtrack playing on the stereo. My crummy pictures do it no justice, but it felt like what I imagine a native American sweat lodge would feel like in terms of experiencing trance-like states. It was a similar feeling to being at a rave tripping on acid, but without the acid.
Fever Ray is touring to promote their self-titled first album which was released in March of this year on Rabid Records in Europe/the UK, on MUTE here in North America (<3 MUTE). The band is lead by Karin Dreijer Andersson who is one half of the critically acclaimed brother/sister duo The Knife.
Wikipedia bio for Karin
The album Fever Ray is a creepy ghostly bunch of songs. Many tiptoe and creak, or shutter with the sound of rustling leaves or doors opening. The stage design epitomized the theme of the album - old Victorian lamps flicker on and off to the beat, all is shrouded in mystery and darkness, skins of animals drape over the musicians and the stage looks like the ceremonial living room of a twisted occultist. Most of the players wear hoods. Smoke permeates everything.
The show was definitely something not to be missed, and I'm glad it lived up to everybody's high expectations. After all, the Knife set the bar pretty high. But Karin has definitely made a statement for herself here with the themes that inspired her to create this hypnotic sound. Looking forward to more music from this 'new' artist!
*****The vids below feature snippets from two of my favorite songs off the album - the first 2 are from "Keep the Streets Empty for Me", and the last one is "Seven". Some of the lasers here are AMAZEBALLZ especially in the 2nd video. I hope you like them!*****
